You Wear What You Are

Instead of writing the news caption as 'you wear what u are', it is written in news clipping as 'You Are What U Wear'.  Surprising indeed! Humans are good at looking at consequences and end results.  When Fashionistas say 'U R what you wear ' .... They mean it by way of bring up, Circumstances, society, knowledge and beliefs. 'U are What U Wear', can not be true for all societies, times and situations.  Before some one becomes a nurse and wears a professional dress, the person was very much aware as to how a Nurse looks like, and why nurses dress the way they do.  It is good, a formal and professional Dress Code brings uniformity, identity and required comfort for a specialized work.

But this should not create a blockage .... people and fashionistas need to be thinking animals and should not get stagnated in their thinking which was pre-conceived some time back.  The reasoning should continue.  And this is possible if either the designer is thoroughly grounded in the disciplines of Sociology, Psychology and Philosophy or some one with these specializations be part of their teams.  One should at least be able to say 'U Wear What U Are'.  Fashionistas need to move more towards rational thinking and professionalism.

Ratan Tata at Harvard Business School

Ratan Tata was  bit confused and humiliated during his first few weeks as a student at the elite Harvard University. Following were the words of Ratan Tata when he was at Harvard for Dedication Ceremony of Tata Hall (for Harvard Business Schools EDPs) : "But what it did for me s I soon found out , the confusion sort of disappeared, and you understood the magnitude of what you had learned in a manner that I believe not possible to do in places other than at this Business School..... Harvard Business School is the Pre-eminent place to be exposed to the World's best thinking."

Happy days for Chanderi Weavers!

Weaving is one of the great art forms which supports lives of weavers world over.  It is a well established fact that weaving all over employs and banks upon tradition, culture and folkways.  And indeed that is the merit and substance upon which weavers make a living.  Not only they make a living out of this art they have deep concern gratitude and respect for their traditional tools techniques that have evolved over a period of time.  With the emergence of new wave of Fashion Designers this art form has bettered the living conditions of many weavers.

Recent article of Purnima Sharma published in Times of India is worth reading.  She has nicely

brought out how with the inputs of Designers, Brands and Export Houses, the Chanderi Weavers have progressed towards modern thinking and better way of living.  Hats off to designers like Garg, Rohit Bal, Manish Malhotra who have brought in a fresh air into the gullible lives of Chanderi Weavers.  Many a weavers houses now have TVs, Refrigerators, iPads and mobiles.  Weavers are now able to afford better education to their children.

What is happening to the Professio of Doctors?

  • The over all image and status of Doctor and his practice is under scrutiny for quite some time by people at large.
  • Indian Medical Council (Amendment) Bill 2013 Bill : Mr.Brajesh Pathak Committee's recommendations are not so much in tune with the over all dignity and status of the Medical Profession. Recommends for examination of medical errors by way of employing non - professionals
  • And now a Junior Doctors  (VARUN PATEL) blog going viral ( http://articles.timesofindia.indiatimes.com/2013-12-04/mumbai/44755941_1_patient-resident-doctors-lok-nayak-hospital ) about callousness in public hospitals .... so sad ... so much irresponsible. Quotes from the Blog of Dr.Patel : 'You will see the resident doctors fighting over a patient.  Nobody wants the patient admitted in his own ward.  They call it 'batting', you would see them proudly blabbering around - 'Hey! Aaj Maine 6 Bat Kiye', meaning he got rid of six patients that day'. ' you meet malpractices at each and every step.  You discover that the true sense of noble profession is lost somewhere'.
LOOSE AND IRRESPONSIBLE COMMENTS EITHER BY A DOCTOR OR OTHER PEOPLE INCLUDING PATIENTS WILL DO MUCH HARM TO PATIENT CARE AND STATUS OF MEDICAL SERVICES AND PROFESSION AND ITS STATUS AND REPUTATION.

A CONSTRUCTIVE APPROACH IS THE NEED OF THE DAY.

Medical Errors and Medical Profession

The Practice of Medicine has continued to command highest level of support and status from time immemorial in societies through out Globe.  Of late the autonomy of the Profession of Doctor seems to be under question. What went wrong. Medical Councils and Associations seem to be under attack for their probable leniency with regard to medical errors. What a price the Profession is paying. Brajesh Pathaks Recommendations on the Indian Medical Council (Amendment) Bill will if accepted, have far reaching impact on the way the profession functions and the way people can question and monitor the way the doctors work and function. Governance of Medical Profession beyond permissible limits will have far reaching effects on the service and devotion of the profession / and the doctors. Let us hope for the best ... and see that Medical Profession continues to give its best to society and see that people should realize that too much of involvement in Medical Administration is to the disadvantage of people and society in general.

TRUST BEGETS TRUST. LET LIFE SAVERS MAINTAIN THEIR HIGH MORALE WHICH THEY HAVE FROM TIME IMMEMORIAL.

Doctor in Question or the Profession in question?

The Words 'Profession' and 'Professionalism' stand for Excellence in Service, Status and Excellence and Commitment in Society since time immemorial.  Doctor/Medicine, Law, Engineering professions are the ones who have been known to be associated with Professionalism and high ideal of Service. What differentiates a profession from a job / occupation? ..... The differentiating factors are : 1.Autonomy and Self Governance 2. Service Mindedness, 3.Long and Continuing Professional Education, 4. Indispensability of the Work / Service.  As every one knows, Professions like Medicine, Law, Engineering etc command high respect and status in society. Lots of occupations / jobs like Nursing, Social Work, Teaching, Librarianship, Accounting etc  keep aspiring for the  privileges, status, respect and societal attention that the Established Professions like Medicine, Law etc command.

What is happening to the Practice of Medicine / Doctors is not very healthy either to Doctors or to the Clients or to Society in General. Altaf Patel's article "The Good Doctor on Modern medicine and Age-old Common Sense"(Times of India, December 2013) is indeed an eye opener for the issues talked about in this write up.  Zist of what Altaf Patel says (includes quotes) :

  1. Doctors routing patients from their hospitals to their private clinics,
  2. Raised a question as to ... 'whether doctors practice be treated as a Business
  3. In my mind, that is an ugly way (means treating the medical practice as a business) of describing the profession.
  4. Earlier Hospitals used to be established and managed by Charitable Trusts, now more of them are established and managed by public limited organizations.
  5. One must consider that ever since the courts have ruled medicine as a consumer service there has been a great change in the way doctors practice medicine.
  6. Regulation for medical negligence was previously done by Medical Councils who understood the intricacies of medicines, which I would not expect a learned judge to understand.
  7. Encouraging patients to do all sorts of tests to find a disease.
THE WAY THE PROFESSION IS PRACTICED BY DOCTORS, THE WAY HOSPITALS ARE MANAGING BY BUSINESS MODELS, THE WAY CONSUMERISM IS MAKING INROADS IN THE PRACTICE, THE WAY MEDICAL DISPUTES ARE HANDLED, THE WEAKENED ROLE OF MEDICAL COUNCILS ...... ALL THESE ARE ENOUGH INDICATIONS OF DE-PROFESSIONALIZATION AND GOING DOWN ON THE SCALE OF PROFESSIONAL ETHICS.

SHALL WE EXPECT PROFESSIONS TO CONTINUE TO BE CALLED AS CALLINGS? .... HOPE BRIGHTER AND FINER DAYS ARE AHEAD.

How much are Professions linked to Power and Authority? .... A Review of the book, “ Professions and Power / Terence J Johnson[i]

How much are Professions linked to Power and Authority? .... A Review of the book, “ Professions and Power / Terence J Johnson[i]
Rajashekhar Devarai[ii]

Terence J Johnson is one of the strong critiques of Professional Trait Model in Sociology of Professions.  He condemns the model to its logical ends.  Surprisingly the best of writings in this regard i.e., of Parsons, Merton, Wilensky, Hughes and many others are brought out in his book in meticulous details.

In Chapter 5 he focusses on Patronage taking Accountancy for example and analyses.  He deliberates on Particularism / localism with regard to the practice of Accountancy.  He also maps ideological struggle between Accountants in Corporations and General Prctioners ..... Intrestingly not much has changed, in this regard.  To perceive and note changes in a profession and its status it does not take decades but centuries.

In Chapter 6 he dwells on Mediation and its power of influence (from State).  He narrates the power relations between producer and consumer when state intervenes and interferes.  He referrs to Dahrendorfs work on Lawyers in this context. He emphasizes on the fact that expertise enjoyed by an occupation shrinks as a result of bureacratixation of tasks,.  The practioner seeks to expand the range of his authority by accepting advisory and managerial positions (King, 1968).

Danger : If professionals become rigid and avoid change, they may loose practice to others.

He brings out the idea that, “Bureaxcratixation of Professionals is a product of different institutionalised forms of control.  To quote Johnson, “The conditions which gave rise to institutions of professionalism are no longer dominant in industrialised societies – a fact which should be direct attention to alternative  forms of control such as those suggested in the discussion of Patronage and mediative systems.”  This seems to be really a misleading statement.  The way professionals exercised their control earlier might have been different, but their relevance for modern world is un-questionable.  To condemn profession and professionalism would be disastrous for modern living.

When social scientists continue to recognise the fact that professionals are on the increase and that professionalism is on the growth side .... They are also equally aware of the new contexts in which professionals and professions operate in modern society.  Johnson directly or indirectly seems to question that there is some essential quality which mark off professionals from all other occupations.  This very question is malacious.  People in general through out the world know what professions are and what professionals are upto.

As propounded by Parsons professions are actuated by the common good and that the professions are to be distinguished by their collective orientation rather than self orientation.  Professional model is holistic and all pervasive.  Society at large decides the position and status of each occupation and its practioners.  Nothing less, nothing more.  It is surprising to note that whenever some professionals re-assess their professional role and over all status of their profession like nursing, teaching, Designing etc, instead of being positive and constructive they start attacking the model itself.  All to proclaim at the end that theirs is a profession and that they are no less to any other occupation.  This is ridiculous.

Seminal Statements on Professionalism by Carr Saunders and Wilson (1933) continue to inspire all those who bestow trust in professional ideology.  They saw professions as amongst the most stable elements in society.  They claim professions to inherit, preserve and pass on a tradition, engender modes of life, habits of thought and Standards of judgement which render them centres of resistance to crude forces which threaten steady and peaceful evolution .... the family, the church and the universities, certain association of intellectuals and above all great professions stand like rocks against which the waves rised by these forces in vain”  Undoubtedly professions stand like rocks against individualism, profiteering and anarchy in society. Millersons list of elements of professionalism need to be further refined.  Sociologists need to still to focus on mesurable indicators of professionalism.  Gutmans Cumulative scale to be popularised.

Johnson and his theoretical propositions are indeed a significant departure from Trait / attributional model.  What surprises is,  he seems to be well read and profound scholarship is proved on his understanding level of profession and its theoretic model.  It looks too immature when he questions the basic tenets of professionalism and profession.  Specially when he goes on to say that professions and professionlism is on decline.  What is want to say and prove ultimately is unclear and misleading.  I certainly think that his theory and findings could go very well within the broad spectrum of Sociology of Professions.  Spear heading a war against professions, functionalism will not yield any meaningful credentials either to professionals nor to socologists like Johnson.  Let inclusiveness prevail in intellectual deliberations and scholarship.  Sociology of Profession I am sure is a field of Studies quite capable enough to encompass different ideologiess and sims.  Hats of to rtheorizationa nd contributions of PaRSONS, Merton, Hughes and others including that of Johnson.  Inspite of proposing extrems criticisms on professional model this b ook of Johnson has succeeded in providing an altogether different outlook and perspective for understanding the World of Work, Jobs, Occupations and Professions.

RESTART YOUR LIFE / NONA WALIA[i] : AN ARTICLE REVIEW by RAJASHEKHAR DEVARAI

·         Christina Rasmussen author of “Seconds First : Live, Laugh and Love Again ....... The rug of your old life was pulled out from under your feet, and you probably dont know where you starnd any more.  But even when you are confused and scared, there is a way out of sadness and the fear.  You just have to actively think, live and act towads the life you want, and not the life you have left behind.”

·         What is important is to try and train your brain to interrupt the negative thoughts and remember that life as it happens cannot be controlled, but how you deal with it is what matters the most” – Nona Walia

When the difficulties and losses occur in ones life it looks like .... every thing is gone.  What would one think when one works day in and day out selflessly for a good cause, career or work .... and lo at the end .... one ends up getting accusations and ridicules and considerations.  What if one happens to be lectured and counselled by the very people who stoo all their life for double standads, small talks and whose integrity was always under doubt.

It is ok.  The right thinking and right people will spring up again and again.  Souls like Nona Walia would not allow right people to get disheartened and disappointed.  Hats off Nona .... many would continue to be thankful to you .... for some times their thankfulness many reach you and many a times may not at all.  Nona would not write for being thanked .... Nona is pro life and pro – smile.

BEING SOCIAL AND FAMOUS ... what is wrong?

BEING SOCIAL AND FAMOUS ... what is wrong? .... A REVIEW OF ARTICLE OF  VIKRAM DOCTOR[i]

This so called essay or wite up by Vikram Doctor on Bapsy Parvy Marchioness of Winchester of Indian Origin seems to be full of revange, malice and enemosity.  What if whe was rich, beautiful and ambitious and if whe wanted to be famous all the while.  Who does  not want to be famous.  Why continue this negative writing .... she passed away in 1995.  The essay is self defeating ... has no message to convey except for propagating some one  for probably wrong reasons. Vikram mentions four steps being followed by people who would like to be famous.  He attacks Pavry for following these steps ..... The whole essay seems to be a systematic effort towards character assassination of a Parsi lady who is no more. What if Vikram wants to be famous and have a mileage out of this controversial writing?
